Pennsylvania Sea Grant Webinar

This webinar, hosted by Pennsylvania Sea Grant, offered an in-depth look at Curly Leaf Pondweed (CLPW), an invasive aquatic plant affecting lakes across Pennsylvania, including Twin Lakes. Experts explained CLPW’s biology, life cycle, and pathways of spread, highlighting its potential to disrupt native ecosystems and lake health.

The discussion covered four main remediation strategies :

·       Nutrient management to reduce conditions that favor CLPW growth.

·       Manual and mechanical harvesting with guidance on best practices and disposal methods.

·       Biological controls, such as introducing grass carp, including permitting and ecological considerations.

·       Chemical herbicides, with an overview of types, timing, and potential non-target impacts.

For each method, the presenters discussed pros, cons, and timing considerations, stressing that successful control often requires a tailored, multi-pronged approach. They emphasized community involvement, early detection, and coordinated management—particularly in connected water systems—to prevent further spread. (See Table Below)
