Protecting Twin Lakes: Septic and Well Water Testing Fall 2024 Program Results Overview
Failing or malfunctioning septic systems pose serious risks to human and animal health, polluting the environment and impacting water quality. Since septic and well water systems are closely interconnected, it is crucial to ensure both are functioning properly. Experts recommend testing well water every 12-14 months for bacteria (total coliform and E. coli) and every three years for pH and total dissolved solids.
To address these concerns, the Stewards of Twin Lakes collaborated with local organizations to provide residents with a comprehensive program offering septic inspections, pump-outs, and well water testing. Below is a summary of the program's impact:
Septic Pump-Outs
Over the past two years, approximately 60 septic systems were pumped using program discounts — 20 or so in 2024 and approximately 40 in 2023. However, with over 550 homes in the Twin Lakes area, this suggests many households have yet to participate. Since septic systems should in general be pumped every three years, regular maintenance is essential to avoid costly failures and environmental hazards.
Septic Inspections
Many families took advantage of our inspection services, which go beyond basic visual checks. One participating company utilized fiber optic camera technology, providing several key benefits:
Early Problem Detection: Identifies cracks, blockages, and root intrusion before they escalate.
Health & Environmental Protection: Detects leaks that could contaminate groundwater and soil.
Cost Savings: Prevents major issues that could lead to expensive system replacements.
Investing in advanced inspections ensures septic systems operate efficiently, prolonging their lifespan and thus safeguarding our watershed.
Well Water Testing
Numerous water testing kits were distributed to residents, and we are currently planning on collecting and analyzing the data to identify any water quality trends around the lakes. Regular testing is recommended as follows:
Annually: Test for bacteria, nitrates, and pH levels.
Every 3-5 years: Comprehensive testing for metals and other contaminants.
After Heavy Rain/Flooding: Check for possible contamination.
Upon Noticeable Changes: Any changes in taste, odor, or color should prompt immediate testing.
Routine water testing provides vital insights into household water quality, prevents health risks, and helps ensure compliance with environmental standards.
Looking Ahead
The Stewards of Twin Lakes plan to offer this program again in the summer, catering to seasonal residents. We strongly encourage all homeowners to take advantage of these services to protect their health and the Twin Lakes environment.
