Curly Leaf Pondweed Webinar – Recording Now Available

The Stewards of Twin Lakes recently hosted an educational webinar on Curly Leaf Pondweed (CLPW), an invasive aquatic plant impacting lakes across Pennsylvania. The featured speakers, Sara Stahlman and Tom Cermak of Pennsylvania Sea Grant, shared their expertise on CLPW’s biology, how it spreads, and practical options for managing it.

The event brought together attendees from Twin Lakes, neighboring lakes, and organizations including Penn State’s Master Watershed Stewardship Program. Participants learned about a range of management strategies—nutrient control, manual and mechanical harvesting, biological control with grass carp, and chemical treatments—along with the pros, cons, and timing considerations for each method.

A lively Q&A session followed, with questions covering plant identification, how CLPW moves between water bodies, turion survival, the effectiveness of grass carp, the potential benefits of winter drawdowns, and best practices for preventing spread.

This was a valuable opportunity for lake communities and partners to share experiences, learn from experts, and explore collaborative approaches to protecting water quality.
